Struggling through the quiet times

I found my motivation waning as 2002 went on. As rehearsals drifted from weekly to fortnightly to sometimes, it was hard to progress. We hadn't realised it at the time, but rehearsing at Chris' house had given us a home base. Also, his style had contributed to our direction and sound. Without him in the band we all suddenly had different ideas of where we wanted the music to go. Matt was into punk and metal, while Ben was big on progressive stuff like Dream Theater. I was a Kiss and Motorhead type guy and Luke was more into Nu Metal. We started finding that our ambitions weren't aligned. When Chris was the main songwriter we played his stuff and that gave us direction whether we knew it or not. Without his influence our ideas became scattered and unfocused. By the second half of 2002 then band had suddenly become a chore. Again, there were no personal issues, we were all good friends, but it's fair to say it wasn't gelling musically.
