Another twist in the tale

On the day of the performance I got a call from Chris to say he wouldn't be playing that night. I had sensed some tension in the days leading up to the show but I was genuinely surprised he wasn't going to play. I had been really looking forward to playing and losing our main guitar player for the night wasn't what I expected. I spoke to the others and we decided that we would go ahead with the performance. I knew the songs reasonably well from when I played bass in the band, plus I had written some of the newer stuff, so I suggested I fill in on guitar. At this point it wasn't my intention to take over on guitar, it was just to cover us for the evening in Chris' absence. He had only said he wouldn't play that night, so until I heard otherwise, it was my assumption he would stay in the band. I had known him for many years and I hoped we could sort things out. So, with very little preparation, I packed my guitar and headed to the venue with a strange feeling in my stomach.
